PRP can help rebuilt structures by increasing the level of bioactive proteins, known as growth factors, in damaged tissues. Platelet rich plasma is prepared from the patient’s own blood, so there is zero risk of allergic reaction. Whole blood is subjected to differential centrifugation to separate red blood cells, white blood cells, platelet poor plasma, and platelet rich plasma. If prepared correctly, the final product is a concentrated serum with platelet levels 6-7 times that of whole blood.
Platelets are non-nucleated fragments of cytoplasm produced in the bone marrow by megakaryocytes. They contain 17 known growth factors which initiate healing by signaling to surrounding cells. Growth factors such as vascular endothelial growth factor, epidermal growth factor, and connective tissue growth factor increase mitosis and migration to heal damaged tissues. Of particular interest for scar resurfacing, transforming growth factor signals surrounding cells to increase collagen synthesis.
During the procedure, micro-needles create controlled skin injuries to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin. These are natural and essential compounds for healing and strengthening the skin's elasticity, but production of the compounds often decreases as we age. The small punctures and PRP stimulate new growth to reduce wrinkles, minimize fine lines, hide scars and turn back the clock. The treatment also makes the skin more receptive to topical gels, creams and serums.
Micro-needling Results and Follow-up Treatments
The results are often dramatic, and many patients only need one treatment each year to achieve optimal results. However, we recommend that you receive two or three treatments the first time, and these should be spaced between six and eight weeks apart.
How Does Micro-needling With PRP Work
Micro-needling is a nonsurgical technique that improves skin texture by applying topical serums or PRP (platelet-rich plasma) across damaged areas of the skin to treat imperfections such as wrinkles, fine lines, scars, acne, stretch marks, age spots and hyperpigmentation. Topical application of PRP during this process stimulates new growth and skin elasticity.
This safe procedure uses a hand-operated pen with an attached sterile needle tip. The tip contains 12 micro-needles that operate at high speed. The device is similar to a tattoo machine but with a higher comfort level.
Studies show that PRP is more effective than other treatments. Study after study has confirms that PRP augments a patient’s ability to re-form damaged tissues without negative side effects. The potency of PRP comes from the massive release of growth factors once the serum is activated. Platelets start releasing growth factors within 10 minutes of activation and excrete 95% of pre-synthesized growth factors within the first hour of activation. Platelets continue to synthesize growth factors for a week to ten days, then they are removed from the bloodstream.
Growth factors are vital for tissue repair. Key growth factors in epithelial cells include: platelet derived growth factor and transforming growth factor both of which regulate collagenase secretion and collagen synthesis; vascular endothelial growth factor increases angiogenesis and stimulate mitogenesis in endothelial cells; and epidermal growth factor which stimulates endothelial chemotaxis, regulates collagenese secretion and stimulates epithelial mitogenesis.
Who Is a Good Candidate for Micro-needling Treatments?
The micro-needling procedure is safe for all skin colors and types, and the therapy can treat sensitive areas under the eyes, around the neck and on the back of the hands. The best candidates are those who have minimal facial sagging.
Who Shouldn't Get Micro-needling With PRP?
People over the age of 80 should discuss any type of cosmetic procedure with their doctor. The treatment is not recommended for people with the following conditions:
- Those with active skin infections
- Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Those with a history of developing keloid or hypertrophic scars
- Those who heal poorly
- People who have open wounds, cuts or abrasions in the area to be treated
- Those who have used isotretinoin, or Accutane, within the last three months
- People who had radiation treatments within the past year

Does Micro-needling Hurt? Is Pain Relief Available?
Most patients tolerate the procedure very well, although some treatment areas are more sensitive than others. The treatment most commonly feels like rubbing light sandpaper across the skin.
Pain relief is available in the form of skin-numbing creams to be applied prior to treatment. Avoid direct sunlight, makeup, sunscreen, and alcohol-based products.
What Are the Potential Side Effects With a Micro-needling Treatment?
The skin will develop a reddish color like a sunburn, and your skin will be very sensitive to chemicals and light. Micro-needling has been around for years, and advances in minimally invasive therapies make the procedure safe and routine for most people. Bruising, swelling and small pustules commonly develop during the healing process. These will usually disappear within two or three days. Your skin will feel dry and tight to the touch, but you should avoid skin care products such as moisturizers and skin toners and topical products with hydroquinone and glycolic, TCA or salicylic acid. Itchiness is also a common symptom, but you should avoid scratching the area. Some inflammation is expected and necessary for faster healing and rejuvenation of the skin.
